Bible says obey government: Romans 13
WorldNetDaily: Obey? Bible says yes, if government’s ‘good’
Columnist Chuck Baldwin wrote unbelievingly that, “in order to convince American citizens to surrender their firearms to the government during a time of martial law, DHS is enlisting the assistance of America’s pastors. According to the DHS, my job as a church pastor, is to tell my congregation that, according to Romans 13, they must surrender their firearms when the government asks them to do so.”
“Let me address the issue bluntly: According to Romans 13, every citizen is only bound to obey his or her governing official to the degree that the governing official does not violate the duty of the citizen to obey the ‘higher powers’ which, for Americans, are God and the U.S. Constitution,” he said.
“Properly understood, Romans 13 teaches that each and every government official (including the President of the United States and all those under him) must submit to the U.S. Constitution,” he said.
“Don’t tell me that the Bible teaches pacifism, because it doesn’t. I am a Christian, and I am a pastor. And I agree with Charlton Heston who said that they could have his guns ‘over my cold, dead hands.’”
Chuck Baldwin says that DHS will tell him that he would have to tell his congregation that according to Romans 13 they must surrender their firearms when the government asks them to do so. I might ask where does the DHS suggest that they will ask law abiding citizens to do that? If you have a city that has broken down into civil disorder should not the respected pastors of the community be used to reestablish civil society? Would you rather that storm troopers did it?
I would venture to say our government and DHS has just as many Christians in it as the rest of our society, so we are not without power or influence in our own government.
As for Romans 13, it is not submitting to some constitution like Chuck Baldwin and others suggest, it is submitting to authorities in government put in place by God to govern society and to deal with the evil doers. Our prime example on this matter is the early Church, none rebelled against the pagan Roman government nor against the ruling Jews.
Christians should not obey any law of government that contradicts God’s law, period. However, when we take that stand so we ought to know that we may be persecuted by the world system for doing it.
Doing what is godly is not a license for violent opposition or slandering people in authority. In reality, they create a straw man argument to play on peoples fears. They really are working for a Christian theocracy in some fantasy promised land of theirs called America.
America will never be the promised land of Christians because we are looking for that city that is not make by human hands and it is not of this world.
