Rudy Giuliani: Being an illegal immigrant not a crime
Rudy Giuliani: Being an illegal immigrant not a crime: “Being an illegal immigrant ‘is not a crime’ and shouldn’t be, Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani said yesterday, drawing quick fire from GOP opponent Mitt Romney.”
What a dumb statement. Giuliani calls them illegal and then says they have not committed a crime. They would not be illegal if they were law abiding. Those who are not law abiding are therefore criminals by definition. The crime was entering the US illegally, not to mention falsified identification etc.
Then Giuliani says we couldn’t prosecute 12 million people. Who said you could? If we quit hiring them and giving aid to them they will go home all by themselves.

Actually, I don’t agree with Rudy all the time, but what I notice is, I don’t agree with him when he’s politicking and talking in soundbites to win over voters. The man is not being stupid here, as I’ve read all over the blogosphere: he’s being pragmatic and realistic. He calls them “illegals” because that’s the lable they are given. “Illegal Aliens” are people who are not here on the invitation or with the knowledge/permission of the government. The bulk of Rudy’s professional experience is in crime as a prosecutor, and as a mayor where he had to deal with problems realistically and in a pragmatic fashion that would get results. He is speaking from that experience/knowledge when he says that it would be impractical to prosecute 12 million illegal aliens. Personally, I would far rather my police force spend its time rooting out crimes that affect my safety (and yes, I do know that some crimes are committed by illegal aliens, and when they are, please take that opportunity to deport them after arrest), than hunting down illegal immigrants. It’s just impractical. What a refreshing thing for a politician to admit. I wish Rudy showed more of this side more often. I find his politicking to be off-putting.
ps- I do agree with you that we should not give them aid. With one exception: I don’t think children should ever be the victims of the inability of their parents to take care of them adequately, even if those parents are not here legally.
Hi ‘anonymous’,
I would tend to agree with your notion that rather than merely hunting down illegals, gov’t should be fighting against crimes that affect society whether committed by illegals or not. It’s true that not all crime is necessarily caused by illegals but the likelihood of it being committed by them is undoubtedly higher. I can see that in my own country, Belgium. Crime rates among many immigrant groups and illegal aliens are much higher than for native Belgians or immigrants who have integrated into our society. Many economic immigrants are from Morocco and Turkey and were allowed to come here by our Western European gov’ts several decades ago. However, they were not consistently repatriated and many acquired Belgian nationality. Still, many among them refuse to integrate into our society and crime among the third generation of these immigrants is unsurprisingly very high because their culture simply doesn’t fit in our society unless they adapt to our norms to the degree that law and order in society remain unaffected. Some would argue those people should nevertheless all be repatriated but that would be quite ‘impractical’ from my point of view and I seriously doubt their orginal countries would readily reaccept them all.
We should not however continue allowing illegal immigration. We have enough immigrants and illegals already. We can’t allow just about anyone in, only some of those who choose the legal path to acquire residency or our nationality. In case they want to acquire our nationality, they should learn at least one of our national languages, depending on where they choose to reside, take courses on our culture and be examined about that, as well as being required to get a job. If they refuse to do all this, they should be expatriated. I think I said it earlier in a comment I posted on this topic: love it or leave it. It’s as simple as that. I have a cousin who lived in Rwanda. He got here, obtained our nationality legally (which was fairly difficult!), learned Flemish since that’s the language of my country’s majority (me included) and studies nursing in Brussels. I think that’s admirable and it could serve as an example to all those who like to pretend they’re victims of a brutal system while parasitizing on the backs of law-abiding citizens, including those who immigrated to our country lawfully.
As for the children of illegals, yes, they are victims. But whose? Their own parents’! Some illegals from Ecuador in my country that never cared one bit to try obtaining our nationality in years of living here illegally recently got away with all that because they have a kid going to school here, Angelica Cajamarca. Of course it’s hard for that child when forced to leave our country, still being so young and all that. But ultimately, it’s the fault of her parents. THEY and THEY alone are responsible for their child’s well-being and by choosing to live illegally in a country and even lie about their true identity, they have only themselves to blame.
Kind regards,
ruben
I’m sorry for the way I worded something in the first paragraph. What I meant to say is that the immigrants I was referring to should not necessarily entirely give up their culture but must adapt to our norms to such a degree that law and order in society as a whole are preserved and public life remains unaffected. So as far as I’m concerned they live the way they want and believe in what they since I believe in the separation of religion and state and freedom of religion and association but they must compromise some of their cultural or even religious practices in public if they want to be treated equally. I think that’s fair.
