Syria is expecting a war with Israel

But they said there was an argument within the Israeli intelligence community whether the military build-up is for an attack or is meant by Syria to pressure Israel into vacating the Golan Heights. Some officials said Syria estimates the U.S. or Israel will attack Iran, and Syria will be drawn into a larger military confrontation by opening up a front against northern Israel. Also, the officials said, Syria may believe Israel will attack first and its preparations are defensive in nature.”

I don’t think Syria is suicidal. They will not start a war unilaterally with Israel but they are building up forces for a war because they believe things will soon get out of control and they will be part of a much larger war. They are probably correct, expectations have a way of playing out in this area of the world. Besides, it is 40 years since the six day war.
