]]>ICANN has some standards right now. If you do not keep your website contacts and locations up to date they can take away your domain name. Of course they set annual fees as well.
There also is the “report abuse” with information they provide about your domain. I do not know if ICANN checks out abuse themselves but they will tell your web host/name seller to do something about abuse. I believe ICANN was the cause of a lot of Big Daddy hosted websites being taken down awhile back.
When ICANN becomes controlled by other nations there is no telling what the directors of it will do. For example, if China and the Muslim states have the most influence on the board they can set up their own control freak standards for names and numbers.
The solution to private company abuse is not supporting them or their sponsors.
