Here is a BreakPoint: Chuck Colson’s worldviews often are befuddling

I almost could not believe my ears this morning when I heard Chuck Colson give one of his BreakPoint commentaries. Here is a man that claims to be a top authority on Christian worldviews. However, his Christian worldviews sometimes seem to be the worldviews of someone who is too accommodating to the enemies of the true gospel. This is the not the first time that Chuck Colson’s viewpoints have left me befuddled although generally I do agree with most of what he says on BreakPoint.

I have issues with what Colson has said before, especially on his very confused ecumenical theology, but his supporting Oprah Winfrey’s book club on his BreakPoint commentary just because Oprah’s book club has two good picks this month takes the cake. (The books are A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations.)

I guess it does not matter to Chuck Colson that he is exposing thousands of people to Oprah’s book club and that her book club quite often promotes books that are hostile to true Christianity. If someone offers a couple of cans of soda pop in a case filled with mostly poison brew should you be promoting the distribution company?

I cannot think of one person that has done more to destroy true Christianity in the last decade than Oprah Winfrey but apparently Chuck Colson’s just does not see the harm in exposing thousands of Christians to this apostate by praising her and selling her picks.

What’s a-matter Chuck, funds down at the end of the year so you’re using the Oprah name to sell stuff?

Chuck Colson was once an Episcopalian but the latest I heard he claims to be a Southern Baptist. Yet, I read that he attends a Roman Catholic Church with his Catholic wife. That is really showing family leadership, Chuck!

You would not be a Southern Baptist in the eyes of most Southern Baptists if you did that. In fact, with Colson’s belief in sacramentalism he would never make the Southern Baptist cut at all. So he can call himself anything he wants but if he quacks like a Roman duck, walks like a Roman duck and flocks together with Roman ducks then he probably is a Roman duck.

It seems to me from what I read, that Chuck Colson has some kind of smorgasbord theology where you take a little from here and a little from there and put it all into a big meat grinder and out comes a great ecumenical sausage theology that is fit for a harlot. The major ingredients in his sausage seems to be Roman Catholicism and sacramentalism.

Too bad all the protestant martyrs that died for opposing the Roman Catholic heretics did not talk to Chuck Colson first. Some might say that the Roman church has changed, but for the most part that would be a lie. They have not changed any major doctrines. Yet Colson thinks there should be no separation with them. In one of his writings he claims that Rome no longer offers indulgences but the Pope recently did offer indulgences to anyone that traveled to Fatima. The Roman church still has a grace, plus sacraments, plus works, plus obedience to Church doctrine path to salvation. Nothing is changing.

Chuck Colson should never have assumed the position as a spokesman for Christianity. Some of his theological positions shows little understanding of the scriptures. The problem with once powerful political people is that they always think that they are the smartest man in the room even in areas where they lack knowledge and understanding. I doubt if he even writes most of his books and positions. He probably has learned that those in power with a highly recognizable name can just place their name on staff or ghost written documents. Of course he would have to agree with what was said, but that does not mean he has biblical understanding.

Colson apparently still thinks that a person becomes a Christian when they go through the “Sacrament of Baptism”. He might actually think that most of that dead wood in liberal mainline Churches are Christians. His assumption seems to be that you can Christianize a culture through baptismal regeneration and sacramentalism rather than through hearing and receiving the Gospel of salvation by grace through faith. He appears to be a soft dominionist and his ecumenical, and sacramental views, and love for the Pope’s positions tells me that he really is a Catholic in everything but name only.

Colson’s befuddled thinking obviously also led him to promote Oprah’s book club and sell her book picks on his BreakPoint ministry. Perhaps like most once powerful political men he has delusions of grander. He may think his own praise for Oprah will encourager her to promote better books in the future. Meanwhile, it is a great venue to make money for BreakPoint. Never-mind, that he is leading naive people into a vipers den, but with his very broad view of Christianity maybe he actually thinks that someone like Oprah that was baptized into a church is still part of the Body even though Oprah has rejected Christianity and has embraced pantheism and other doctrines of demons.

The bottom line is that Chuck Colson’s worldviews often are befuddling to discerning Christians because he cannot seem to separate true Christian doctrine from his own ecumenical and often dominionist worldviews. Do Evangelism a favor Chuck, stay on biblical ground and quit pandering with the opposition or take a break point.

Here are two prior posts of mine on Chuck Colson.

Chuck Colson’s new book provides a theological grounding for Christians?

Does Chuck Colson know the Christian faith well enough to teach theology?

  1. I agree. For me personally, he tends to be too accommodating to the ecumenical movement, so I pretty much no longer pay much attention to what he has to say and haven’t for years. Some of the things he has said in the past can even be called Universalistic in nature.
